BIOGRAPHY:
Born in 1978, natural from Maricao, PR.
At the age of 17, he began university studies at the "Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico" (E.A.P.). In 2001, he completed a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts with a specialization in Painting, graduating “Suma Cum Laude” and receiving the "Dr. José R. Oliver" medal for his excellent academic performance. In 1998 during his time at the institution, he was awarded second place in the "Annual Student Exhibition" for his outstanding work.
In the years 2000 and 2001, the "Randy Barceló Foundation" granted him its eponymous scholarship for his remarkable contributions to the field of painting. In 2009, among other awards. he received scholarships from the "Karrvaz Foundation" and the "III Millenium Scholarships," allowing him to pursue various artistic projects in Albacete, Spain, for a one year period.
In 2017, following the impact of Hurricane "Maria" on the island of Puerto Rico, Fabián Detrés was compelled to temporarily pause his career as an artist, relocating to the United States and joining the ranks of the petroleum industry. After this enforced hiatus, he resumed his profession with the solo exhibition "42 and Reset" at the end of 2020.
Throughout his artistic career, Fabián Detrés has been involved in numerous local and international projects and exhibitions. He has also played a role in the creation and development of various culturally significant projects, with notable mention of the "Archivo Digital Histórico del Pueblo de Maricao".
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Psyche and Self-Reflection
Over two decades of my career as a visual artist, my work has been deeply rooted in the exploration of the human psyche, the fragility of our behavior, and the subjectivity of our perceptions. Series such as "Philosopher's Stone," "Lunar Circus," and "Light and Reflections" are clear examples of how my approach has always been introspective, self-reflective, and symbolic, aiming to unravel the mysteries of the human mind and emotions through art.
Technique and Medium
Since my years as an art student, my work has been characterized by a constant exploration of both technical and conceptual aspects. My personal philosophy as an artist is that the medium and techniques used in my work should always serve as secondary tools in favor of the theme and the conceptual proposal. This approach has allowed me to create a fluid body of work without imposing prejudices. In summary, my goal is to keep the audience receptive and expectant through experimentation and a versatile body of work that always bears my personal signature.
Hurricane Strike and Conceptual Shift
After the devastating passage of Hurricane "Maria" in September 2017, deep wounds were left in Puerto Rico and the other islands of the Caribbean. Nature, economy and basic services were severely affected, and these scars are still keenly felt.
In that challenging moment, like thousands of fellow Puerto Ricans, I was compelled to migrate to the continental United States in search of a new life. My journey led me to Houston, Texas.
During that period, I worked as an inspector of chemical products and petroleum derivatives, a profession that carries significant risks. This experience brought me into direct contact with the harsh reality of migration, surrounded by colleagues from different parts of the world, sharing stories of seeking and adapting to a new environment.
This experience left a profound mark on my personal and artistic perspective. My art, still maintaining its introspective nature, transformed into something more. It became empathic.
Currently, I'm creating various series that explore the central theme of migration. I consider migration not only as a constant social reality throughout human history but also as a crucial element for the progress and evolution of our planet.
